Mike Zervos is an accomplished executive with more than 25 years of management experience. Mr. Zervos is well-versed in driving revenue and profit growth through continuous process improvement in both domestic and international operations. He has expertise in underground and surface mine management, mining engineering, mining economics, business development and logistics. Mr. Zervos has proven ability to achieve world-class results in safety leadership, asset development and operational efficiency. Before joining United Coal Company as CEO and President in 2005, Mr. Zervos served as Senior Executive Officer of Global Energy Management, LLC, a company he formed to pursue coal acquisition opportunities in the Central Appalachian basin. His previous executive management experience also includes President of Mining Operations for Drummond Company, Inc., a large international coal company with more than 3,000 employees and an annual coal production exceeding 30 million tons. He was also President of Arch of Kentucky, Inc., a subsidiary of Arch Coal, Inc. Mr. Zervos has a B.S. in Mining Engineering and a M.B.A. from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. |

As the Company's Vice President of Operations, Ken McCoy is responsible for all elements of coal production at underground operations company-wide. The presidents of the Company's operating subsidiaries report directly to Mr. McCoy, who is responsible for ensuring compliance with production forecasts and mine plans. His education includes a B.A. in Education and a M.A. in Mine Safety from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. Before joining United Coal with Mr. Zervos in 2005, Mr. McCoy was also with Global Energy Management and had previously served as General Manager of the Shoal Creek complex, a large longwall operation in the Southern Appalachian field owned by The Drummond Company. He was also President and General Manager of Lone Mountain Processing for Arch Coal, Corporate Director of Safety for Arch Coal, and held a series of managerial positions in safety and operations with Arch Coal and Amherst Coal Company. Along with Bob McAtee, Mr. McCoy is one of the most widely recognized safety experts in the domestic coal industry. |

Brian Sullivan joined The United Company, our parent company, in 2001, and has been responsible for legal affairs - including merger and acquisition work, litigation and human resources - for the Company and all subsidiaries. His responsibilities for United Coal include acquisitions, land and leasing, regulatory affairs, public relations and human resources. Prior to joining The United Company, Mr. Sullivan was in the litigation departments of two national law firms, working on behalf of large corporate clients on matters involving securities law, bankruptcy, employment law, business torts and defending products liability actions. Mr. Sullivan's previous work experience includes five years with the law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker in Atlanta, Ga., and as an associate at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn. He is currently admitted to practice in Virginia, Georgia, New York and the District of Columbia. He has a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Duke University in Durham, N.C., and a J.D. from The State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude. |

Along with Mr. Zervos, Mr. McAtee previously worked for Global Energy Management, managing human resources, safety and employee development. Before his leadership role with Global Energy Management, Mr. McAtee served as Director of Human Resources, Safety and Employee Development for Drummond Company, where he designed and launched a safety program that led to a 40 percent decline in accident severity, in addition to a 53 percent drop in lost-time accident frequency for a company with more than 3,000 employees. Mr. McAtee holds a B.S. in Biology from Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va., and a M.A. in Occupational Safety and Health Engineering from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. |

Ralph Haring heads up all export and domestic industrial marketing for United Coal. He has 38 years of coal sales experience marketing Ohio, Pennsylvania and Central Appalachian steam and metallurgical coal both domestically and abroad. Mr. Haring joined the "original" United Coal in 1979 as Vice President of International Marketing, where he worked until the sale of the Company in 1997. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Mr. Haring worked toward a degree in Business Marketing at Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo., and the University of Denver in Denver, Colo. |

As Vice President and Controller, Earl Humber is responsible for budgeting and forecasting, as well as overseeing all Company accounting and financial reporting functions. Mr. Humber's education includes a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Humber has more than 25 years of relevant coal industry experience on the consumer side. He served as Vice President and Controller for Sun Coke Company before joining United Coal in 2005. |

In his role as Vice President of Maintenance Systems, Charles "Ed" Toppings is responsible for the development and implementation of all preventive maintenance initiatives at the Company. He is also involved in the specification, procurement and installation of surface and underground plant and equipment. His education includes an associate's degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and a M.B.A. from California Coastal University in Santa Ana, Calif. Before joining United Coal, Mr. Toppings served as the Fixed Plant Maintenance Superintendent for Drummond, LTD in Colombia, South America. He also previously served as Maintenance Superintendent for Mining Technologies, Inc., Lone Mountain Processing, Inc., and Arch of Kentucky's No. 37 Mine. |

Clyde Stacy has been an owner-operator in the mining industry for more than 30 years. Mr. Stacy is President and CEO of Southern Mining, Inc., a mineral holdings and development company. He is also President and CEO of Pioneer Group, Inc., with interests in mining, real estate and construction projects. Mr. Stacy was previously President and CEO of The Rapoca Group, a mining company with property holdings in Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia. He serves on the Board of Managers for United Coal. Mr. Stacy is the Founder and Director of the Coal Fields Charities, which has been assisting underprivileged children in Southwestern Virginia for more than 20 years. |

Kenny Dockery is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The United Company. He has been with The United Company for more than 25 years and is responsible for the organization's accounting, tax, information systems and technology, and finance functions. Ronald Patterson is Manager of Underground Engineering for Pocahontas Coal and Carter Roag Coal. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the coal industry to his position. Before coming to Pocahontas and Carter Roag, Mr. Patterson served as Manager of Operations and Chief of Engineering at Wind River Consulting/New South Resources in Beckley, W.Va. He has a B.S. in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. Mr. Patterson is a Certified Professional Engineer and Professional Surveyor in West Virginia. |

Lonnie Lowe is Manager of Underground Operations for Sapphire Coal. Mr. Lowe has more than 35 years of underground mining experience, including more than 29 years with United States Steel Corporation and Arch Coal. He worked in several different management positions for both companies, including Supervisor of Safety and Training, Shift Foreman, Assistant General Mine Foreman, General Mine Foreman, Mine Superintendent, Superintendent of Operations and Mine Manager. Mr. Lowe has certifications in Kentucky as a Mine Foreman, Surface Foreman, Mine Emergency Technician, Underground Mine Instructor, Mine Inspector and Electric Worker. |

Keith Hargrove brings nearly 30 years of mining experience to his position as President of Sapphire Coal Company, a subsidiary of United Coal. He is responsible for the overall management of Sapphire, which includes its employees and operations. Before coming to Sapphire Coal, Mr. Hargrove was with Arch Coal. He has a B.S. in Mining Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va. Having spent more than 25 years in the coal industry, Dennis Phillips is uniquely qualified to oversee all Company coal preparation processes. His resume includes extensive engineering and management experience, most recently serving as Vice President of Business Development at Taggart Global in Pittsburgh, Penn. Phillips began his career in underground mining and later worked for several coal companies as a Mining Engineer, Preparation Engineer, Preparation Superintendent, Assistant Coal Preparation Director, Senior Mining Engineer, Research Associate, Process Engineering Manager and Engineering Consultant. Phillips also spent four years as Manager of Sales and Technical Services for The Daniels Co. in Bluefield, W.Va. His educational background includes a doctorate in Mining Engineering, Coal and Mineral Processing from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va.; an M.B.A. from West Virginia University College of Graduate Studies, Institute, W.Va.; and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va. Phillips is a Registered Professional Engineer and holds a West Virginia Assistant Mine Foreman Certificate. He is a member of the Society of Mining Engineers and has written several articles for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Coal Prep and World Coal organizations. |

Lynn Shanks has been a member of United Coal Company’s leadership team since 2006. After serving as President of Carter Roag for a year, he became President of Pocahontas Coal Company in 2007. He was named President of both UCC subsidiaries in June 2008. A 27-year veteran of the mining industry, Shanks’ broad experience includes operational and administrative expertise. Prior to joining UCC, he served as Vice President of Operations at Century Coal, London, Ky.; President of Operations at Anker Coal Group, Morgantown, W.Va.; and President/General Manager at Maple Creek Mining in Bentleyville, Pa., as well as in a number of other coal mining management positions. Shanks earned a bachelor’s degree in Mining Technology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He also studied Mine Management and Business Management. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Coal Association, Pennsylvania Coal Board and the Holmes Safety Association. He and his wife, Cheryl, reside in Daniels, W.Va. |
